China

Perhaps Shanghai symbolises modern China better than any other city. Progress is at break-neck speed and signs of new wealth, building and shopping are everywhere. The old city is being demolished for a new forest of apartment complexes that stretch beyond the horizon. However, the chances of seeing the horizon are pretty remote as the smog in eastern Chinese cities has to be seen to be believed. There are few actual 'sights' in Shanghai apart from the Bund area along the river looking towards to and the soon-to-be-demolished parts of the old city. However, it's still a great place to hang out, walk, shop and eat.

The old parts of Shanghai that remain are fascinating. The government is building new apartments and residents will be moved and then whole suburbs bulldozed and replaced with new buildings. While it lasts, the old part of the city is great to walk through and feel some of the community spirit.

Chinglish is Chinese-English and is everywhere. It's often funny, usually useless when on signs and sometimes completely incomprehensible. If you haven't been to engrish.com then do so when you have some time. It's a great collections of English from different parts of Asia including China.
