I had no idea about the ancient, pre-Incan adobe city of Chan Chan near the modern city of Trujillo in Northern Peru before arriving. It was one of those real pleasures to 'discover' 11 square kilometres of a city made entirely of mud - some of it in excellent condition, some heavily restored and much in a late state of disrepair. Strangely, for sea level in the tropics the air was cold - to the extent that we were wearing alpine jackets during the middle of the day!

The beach nearby has a good break, as well as classic straw boats. Local fishermen cruised the surf setting and checking nets.
