Copan was a nice stop along the way, but my real reason to go to Honduras was to dive the Bay Islands. Honduras has a long Caribbean coastline, but the best diving is on off-shore islands. We headed to Roatan as we were told it had some of the best diving. The first, rather flattering image shows me (left) with a couple of friends relaxing on the back of the wreck of the Odyssey at about 100 ft down. The guy on the right is Aucklander Chris Moon, who was taught by our former colleague Andrew Massey.

Roatan has some of the best diving I have ever experienced. Amazing variety of corals, sponges and critters big and small made every dive worthwhile. One of many highlights was a night dive where the water was so still and clear you could lie at on your back at 10 m and watch the stars. This year had also been one of the best years to see the awesome Whale Shark, something I have always wanted to see since seeing my first nature documentary about them when I was around 5 years old. Unfortunately, we were at the wrong time of year and they had all headed off by the time we got there.

I was reluctant to leave Roatan, but we said adios to our many new friends and headed off to Nicaragua with our Canadian friend Deirdre (Dee, who we had first met studying 2 months before in Guatemala).
